No More Page 3 – What You Can do…

Hello there revolutionary…..So you’ve signed the petition. What else can you do?’

Well there’s loads of stuff! Some of which will take just moments to do and really will make a big, BIG difference!!

But while we’re here we’d just like say the biggest THANK YOU for your support so far, because your support has been AMAZING.

So many people have sent us messages of kind support or explained some truly terrible things that have happened to them that they feel happened as a result of the normalization of sexual objectification of women. So many women have confided how these images directly affected their self-esteem growing up and beyond. We’ve had BEAUTIFUL protest poems recorded in the name of No More Page 3.

This campaign has sparked so much truth and creativity. Thank you. IT FUELS US.

So now…what can you do?

  • You can send for a campaign pack! Simply email NMP3angela@gmail.com giving your name and address.
  • Please share the petition with as many people as you can family, friends, work colleagues, Facebook and twitter networks, email your contacts. Every single signature makes a difference. You could also pin-up a signature sheet at work/school/college/at a club/anywhere you like. You can download and print them here –
  • You could give out flyers to people you know or leave some hanging around at work/school…etc. You can download and print those here
  • Put up a poster!! They are here
  • Please keep in touch with us, through twitter @nomorepage3 on facebook or through our tumblr page and blog We aren’t having comments here, not because we don’t want to hear from you but just because we’re so busy with responding to the messages you leave us elsewhere.
  • Perhaps buy and wear a T-Shirt (It’s a real conversation starter ;)?

Want to do more?

  • Maybe you could gather your friends/dance group/guides troop etc and set up a protest in a local town centre with petitions, flyers etc?
  • Do you enjoy writing? Could you write a blog about the campaign and share it (don’t forget to send it to us)?
  • Ask your local radio/newspaper/TV station if you can do a piece for them about the campaign and why you support it.
  • Are you a really creative person? – what about a poem, story, art piece, dance, song, photographs? You could record it or send it to us so we can share it.
  • Feeling brave? Approach your local newsagent or shop and ask them to consider putting the Sun on the Top shelf. Tell them why you think it should be there.
  • Feeling sneaky? Go into your local shop and put the sun on the top shelf yourself.
  • Print out some of out “think about it” flyers and slot them into copies of the sun in your local shop or hand them out to Sun buyers at the door.
  • If you see a copy left lying around take a picture and send it to us for our evidence that not buying it doesn’t work.
  • Organise a flash mob we have a song and dance here that you can use or why not do your own? Don’t forget to tell us when and where it will be and video it so we can share it.
  • Why not ask the man at the top of all this, Rupert Murdoch, if he could help us out. If you’re on twitter, please do send him a polite tweet that he call Dominic Mohan straight away and say ‘Hi Dom, it’s time we said No More Page 3′

So here are just things that you can do…but we’re sure we’ll be adding more soon. So cheerio and a big thank you  from us for now. Oh and have you signed the petition??

1) Contact Your MP

Many MPs feel very passionately about the sexual objectification of women and the impact it has on their constituencies. We have created a special letter addressed to David Dinsmore editor of The Sun from MPs. We would like you to ask your MPs if we can add their name to it. (sorry we have to ask you to do it, but MPs only answer requests from their own constituents!) (and please do feel free to write your own letter, this is just in case you’re short on time)

You can find out how to contact your MP here

http://www.writetothem.com/

Dear MP

I am wholeheartedly supporting the campaign No More Page 3, appealing to David Dinsmore to please stop showing the bare breasts of young women in The Sun newspaper. These pictures were introduced in 1970, an incredibly sexist era. We do not think they should remain in 2012. Children should not, when faced with this paper, see pictures of men, in clothes, doing various activities, running the country, for example and then see one huge image of a woman in no clothes, doing nothing. It sends out an unacceptable message about a woman’s place in society.

No More Page 3 has public backing from Girlguiding UK (over 500,000 young members) the British Youth Council (over 220 youth organisations) Girls’ Brigade, the NUT, ATL, NAHT (combining over 500,000 teachers, lecturers and Head Teachers) Unison (our largest union, 1.3 million members) The Royal College of Nursing, The National Assembly of Wales and the Scottish Parliament held a cross party debate on Page 3, all parties agreeing it was damaging and had it go. In addition to this over 129,000 people have signed an online petition, 151 cross-party MPs have signed a letter of support, as have a host of charities including Rape Crisis, Women’s Aid, End Violence Against Women Coalition.

I am asking you to add your name to this MPs letter, addressed to David Dinsmore, editor of The Sun.

I would be proud to say that we can add your name to this.
Can we please do so?
Thank you so much for your time and for all the work you do for our society.

kind regards

YOU

OR,

an even speedier way of doing this is through twitter. Find out if your MP is on twitter here!

http://tweetminster.co.uk/mps

Simply tweet them the link to the MPs Letter  https://nomorepage3.wordpress.com/letter-to-the-editor-signed-by-mps/  asking if they would kindly add their name.

Here are all the MPs who haven’t signed…yet! : )

Then just send us a message through twitter or facebook or email us at nomorepage3@gmail.com when they answer YES!

2) Contact The Big Sun Advertisers

So, you’ve contacted your MP, now, who else can you contact that is in a powerful position to sway the powers that be at The Sun??

THE ADVERTISERS.

That’s right, the companies who give millions of pounds, the pounds that you work hard for and spend in their shop, to The Sun, which has Page 3, ‘the biggest thing normalizing the sexual objectification of women’ (a quote from one of the signatures on our petition – thank you, we quite agree)

So please can you copy the below letter and post it on the facebook pages beneath.

I am wholeheartedly supporting the campaign No More Page 3, which is appealing to Dominic Mohan, editor of The Sun, to please remove the bare breasts of young women from this family newspaper.

We realize you are one of the largest advertisers in The Sun. We see you too as culpable. You perpetuate this culture of objectification. You pride yourselves on family values and yet you give the hard earned money that people spend with you to The Sun newspaper. We think this is totally against the image you seek to portray. We would like you to withdraw from advertising in The Sun newspaper until it drops these grossly inappropriate pictures.

As you can see we are incredibly active across all forms of social media.  We would applaud this decision for the heroic act that it would be.

Until we hear from you with a positive response, we are inviting our supporters to refrain from spending money in your stores from 29th Oct – 4th Nov in protest.

We’re very serious about the sexual objectification of women

(these are facebook groups, some will allow you to make your own post, on others you’ll have to leave it in a comment thread)

3) EMAIL YOUR CONTACTS

Now you’ve told your MP, and the advertisers that you’re serious about this. Perhaps you might be able to email the contacts in your address book.

We’ve written a template email for you to cut and paste, so it won’t take you too long. (we do liberally use exclamation marks and the word ‘Ooo’ please delete as appropriate!!!)

Hello!!!

Sorry for mass impersonal group email but it would have taken me forever to do this otherwise.

I am supporting a campaign called No more Page 3 in a big way. It’s appealing to Dominic Mohan, the editor of The Sun, to please stop showing the bare breasts of young women in this our most widely read family newspaper.

The largest female image in the newspaper shouldn’t be of a young woman standing there in her knickers. We are asking that women be represented with respect in our most widely read paper, like men are.

I would like to encourage you to please sign the petition here. We could really do something positive here, not just for ourselves but for future generations of women and men.

If you are sitting on the fence about this issue, can I ask you to have a read of this beautiful article by Lucy Mangan.

Or to please watch this wonderful protest poem in support of No More Page 3 or this one! (it does have the f*** word in it, but it is very powerful, and she makes a very, very good point)

Thank you so much.

Ooo and I really do hope you’re well!

4) ‘NO MORE PAGE 3’ POSTERS, SIGNATURE SHEETS AND FLYERS

Why not give out flyers to people you know or leave some hanging around at work/school…etc?

Or go into your school, college, office, sports club, town centre, in fact ANYWHERE and collect hard copy petition signatures

How about putting up a No More Page 3 poster or signature sheet at work/school/college/at a club/anywhere you like.

And while they’re printing hunt for the blue tack (why is it always so hard to find the blue tack??)

No More Page 3 Poster

When all your signature sheets are full up, scan them and email them to us at nomorepage3@gmail.com (or email us and we’ll tell you where to post the hard copies)

5) GET A ‘NO MORE PAGE 3’ T-SHIRT

Buy a No More Page 3 T-shirt as modeled here by one of our supporters

So we have these rather fetching campaign T-shirts. And you can have one too! Only £10 (+ post and packaging)  all the profits go to towards breast cancer clinical research trials at The Princess Alexandra Hospital Charitable Trust – Breast Trials Unit, the research there helps the whole country and it’s where they treated Lucy’s amazing sister in law. 8)   Gather your friends/dance group/guides troop etc and set up a protest in a local town centre with petitons, flyers etc

16)   Organise a flash mob

17)   Or anything else you can think of….

So here are just things that you can do…but we’re sure we’ll be adding more soon. So cheerio and a big thank you  from us for now. Oh and have you signed the petition??
